Keeping up with a Healthy Pet

Your pets wellness exam is an overall general health exam. Just as you may get a physical from your primary care physician every year, it is recommended your pet do the same.
A wellness exam at the office is a general health assessment of your pet. This exam may include parasite screening, blood work, urinalysis, ear and eye screening and possible X Ray's. Your wellness exam will go over your pets diet, exercise, behavior, thirst, habits, observing the general appearence of your pet, listening to its brething and heart. Senior pets (over 7 years old) may require geratric blood work with follow up visits every 3-6 months if they present chronic health issues. A wellness exam is recommended for a healthy pet at least annually, to maintain optimal health of your pet.

Why does my pet need all of this?Your pet can't tell you how they feel, as a matter of fact, animals are very good at masking symptoms or illnesses, as a result, disease may be present before you are aware of it. Many dogs will hide signs of early illnesses and disease due to their survival instincts, which you may not notice till your pet is in the end stage of the disease. Your pets health condition may become advanced before your dog shows any obvious or recognizable problems. A wellness exam with disgnostic testing may show fundamental issues pertaining to your pets health. If this can be detected before your pet gets sick most often it can be treated or measures taken to maintain the illness. A early detection and early treatment is always much less costly then when a disease or illness becomes severe.
Wellness exams are so important in the geriatric pet, since there is a greater chance that underlying disease may be present. The quality of life for your pet is whats important, and we wish nothing but the best quality for all our patients. |

“Animals are more than ever a test of our character, of mankind’s capacity for empathy and for decent, honorable conduct and faithful stewardship. We are called to treat them with kindness, not because they have rights or power or some claim to equality, but in a sense because they don’t; because they all stand unequal and powerless before us.” ― Matthew Scully
