Spay & Neuter

  • Your female pet will live a longer, healthier life. Spaying helps prevent uterine infections and breast tumors, which are malignant or cancerous in about 50 percent of dogs and 90 percent of cats. ...
  • Neutering your male companion prevents testicular cancer and some prostate problems.
  • Pyometra. Pyometra, which is a severe infection of the uterus, can be fatal to dogs and cats when untreated. In intact animals (those that aren't spayed yet), the chronic effect of sex hormones can result in overstimulation of certain cells within the uterus called cystic endometrial hyperplasia (CEH).
  • Spaying your dog too early can result in health problems later on since her hormones should have some time to work. Early spaying can increase the risk of hip dysplasia, torn ligaments, bone cancer, and urinary incontinence
  • A male dog can be neutered any time after eight weeks of age. A few years ago, most veterinarians advised waiting until puberty hit at about six months, and some still make that recommendation. Talk to your vet about what's best for your dog.
  • If you have to leave your just-neutered pet alone for long periods of time, keep him/her in a crate, kennel or a small room to restrict movement. ... Likewise, intact males could mount your spayed female. So it is best to separate the pets for a few weeks post surgery
  • While there is no age considered as too late for neutering a dog, their health is ultimately the most pressing concern veterinarians face in making recommendations whether or not to go through with the procedure.
  • Activity levels may be reduced in both males and females after spaying and neutering, but this is by no means certain in all dogs. It's important to note that males may still engage in full-testosterone male behaviors while their male sex hormone levels diminish after surgery. This can take up to six weeks.
  • Spaying and neutering contributes to their good health. Spaying and neutering prevents unwanted litters from suffering everything previously listed. It means less animals in shelters. ... It is not as cruel as what happens to the unwanted , homeless animals born because we failed to spay and neuter.
  • How long after neutering before we can take our dog out for walks? We would usually advise that you keep your dog rested for 24-48 hours post surgery with just gentle exercise in the garden. After this we would then advise short lead walks until they are seen for their post op check.
