Microchip

Picture

The American Humane Association estimates over 10 Million Dogs & Cats are lost or Stolen Each Year.

About 22 percent of lost dogs that entered the animal shelters were reunited with their families.
However, the return-to-owner rate for micro-chipped dogs was over 52 percent (a 238 percent increase).

A microchip implant is a "permanent" ID for your pet.  The cost for the microchip is $45.00 and this includes the registration fee.  After your pet is micro chipped you will need to go on the appropriate web site and register your pet, with your demographics and information for locating you if your pet is lost.  This is the step that most owners forget.  It is just as important to register your pet as it is to get the microchip.  If you do not register, they will have no information to locate the owner.

The microchip comes preloaded in a sterile applicator and is injected under the loose skin between the shoulder blades.
The chip, about the size of a large grain of rice, uses passive RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology, and is also known as a PIT tag (for Passive Integrated Transponder).  The process takes only a few seconds, and your pet will not react any more than he would to a vaccination.  This procedure does not require anesthetic or pain medications after.  The microchip is implanted in the office and your pet will go home with you immediately following.

Micro-chipping substantially increases the likelihood of finding your pet by offering secure, reliable, unique and permanent identification if your pet is lost.  Most animal clinics have the proper scanner to glide over your pet which indicates they have had a microchip implanted.  The clinic can then contact the company, retrieve the owners information, contact the owner and return the pet.

In most countries, pet ID chips adhere to an international standard to promote compatibility between chips and scanners. In the United States, however, there are a few  types of chips compete along with the international standard.  Consult with your Veterinarian weather your chips registration is up to international standards, especially if you will be traveling out of the country with your pet.

We urge you to get your pet microchip-ed, but even more important REGISTER your patient immediately after your pet receives their chip.  Many pets have come into our office that had been microchip-ed but NOT REGISTERED.  Micro-chip and register your pet today.
